1930’s neck scarves

I just adore 1930’s neckscarves. I guess they would provide some level of warmth but I think they look much better as an accessory.  I know that this is a blog on vintage crochet but I’m going to throw in some knitting in the mix once in awhile and today’s the day. These 1930s scarves are full of lovliness. Maybe one of these days I can work on my knitting skills and make some of these for myself. I know that there are patterns for crochet but I think they look better knitted. Some things just look better knitted.

This first picture is a yucky mixed with goody!  I think if you got rid of the hat and all of the circles on the scarf and bag, it would be great. I really like that little bag.

This one is knitted. I love the hat and scarf combo. That is a great hat.

I think it would be easy to make this scarf. Looks like a simple DC scarf with a few square motifs on the end. I REALLY like this hat. As I stated in a previous post, I really like the look of berets and I love the pleating detail on this one.

more yuckies

Hi. Are you all loving these yuckies as much as I am? I hope so. Here’s today’s installment:

Ok, I’m all for little girls having dolls, etc. But I think this goes way over that line. This is just weird and creepy. Plus it doesn’t look very comfortable. I would think the doll heads would weigh you down and wouldn’t stay on your ears right. I think you’d be fussing with them the whole time you’re wearing them.

Ahhh the 80s! I’m a child of the 80s. I thought this kind of fashion back then was sooooo cool.  This picture is from 1989. I had a sweater just like this in 89 too. If you go to the malls now, you will see that 80s fashions are popular again but I don’t think we’ll ever see sweaters like this again though. And that’s a very good thing.   But…how cool would this be if you wore this to an 80s themed party! You would rock that party hard!

I’m sure there are some of you who think this is OK. I would consider this a “Borderline Yucky”.  I think this is way too much of one theme going on here. First off, I can see that the flowers are made with loops instead of individual stitches. Any mom will tell you that this is NOT OK for small children. They get their fingers caught in there all the time and pull the stitches and it would be ruined very quickly but if they twist their fingers around the loop, they can get their fingers caught in there and it will get caught and cut off blood circulation and that could lead to bad things. I speak from experience from this. But we were very lucky to catch it before it caused any irreversible damage. But I never want to see my son’s finger that purple again!

Ugly 70s stuff

More yuckies. Gosh…I love yuckies. They are fun to find and even more fun to share. These are all from the same book.

The book said that this was a wedding dress but it could totally look like a prom picture too.  Actually, the top of the dress is cute but the bottom…makes it look like something a jester would wear. I LOVE the blue tux too. Nothing says classy quite like a blue tux with a huge bowtie.

This is the dress that Molly Weasley wore in the 70s.

ok, I do like this gypsy type hat scarf thingy.  I don’t like the sweater though. Looks like it would rub your arms weird and hurt after wearing it for a bit.

not vintage but…here is a man after my own heart:

I love potholders

Vintage crocheted potholders are just so darn cute. I don’t understand why they aren’t popular anymore. I have a few hanging in my kitchen for decoration (I’ll have to take a pic of them for you). I have picked up a few at the thrift shop lately too. Poor little things :( I’ll give them a good home.

I don’t actually use my potholders though. I’m scared to ruin them. I do have a 1940’s reproduction potholder that I made that I do use. (Again, I’ll have to take pics and post the link to the potholder pattern).

I think vintage potholders are so cheery and fun. They just make me happy and all warm and fuzzy.

Here are a few that I have found online that I really like:

Do you have a pattern to this picture below? It’s a very popular vintage style but I can’t find a pattern online. If you do, I’d love to see it.

I LOVE the colors below. Yellow/green/white are just a great combo.

it’s easy to find 60s yuckies

Hi. Here are some more yuckies I have found.

Can someone please explain to me the need for toilet lid covers? I  have never seen one that looks good, and they are 100% gross! EWWWW. There is no way to keep them clean while you use them. I can just imagine how many bacteria and “body stuff” is growing in the yarn after you put it on. EWWWW!!!!

look at the first picture! Holy cow…don’t move or it will cut off what’s left of any blood cirulation you have going on there.

I don’t understand the chick in the middle. That thing on her head looks like one of those rags you see in the old silent films where the guy has a toothache and he ties a big rag on his head. Not sure the purpose of this here.  If it’s a kerchief type thing it would be much better if it just had a string you could tie under your chin! And I think the tights are too much too. Way too much white yarn on this chick!

Some more vintage yuckies

Tonight I’m going to show you some yuckies I recently found. These aren’t as old as pictures that I normally post, these are from the 60s/70s/80s. It’s VERY VERY VERY easy to find vintage yuckies from these decades. Granny squares were very popular and so was itchy badly made acrylic yarns. Browns and oranges were most popular. I think we all had a brown/orange/white/tan crocheted afghan during those decades. My parents still have the one my grandma made and they still use it.

I am not a fan of crocheted bottoms be it skirts, pants, shorts, whatever. I just cannot see how they can be comfortable and they would surely stretch out during the day and become really lose and I would think you’d have to line them because as the stitches stretch, you’d be able to see your underwear. I don’t mind the vest on the right but the pants gotta go. Oh and I’m sure when you walk in them, your legs rub together and it has to feel really weird and rub your skin weird? Wouldn’t it?

Here is another skirt/vest combo. This is very Brady Bunch.

More pants but these just aren’t pants….they are bell-bottoms! Yep, you could definately see underwear thru these. The tunic top is cute though. I like the color too.

more tomorrow…

Some pictures that I like

Hi. I’m still sick. *cough* so my motivation to anything is very low. I haven’t crocheted in 5 days! UGH! This post will be short because I’m having a hard time thinking straight enough to type/write/be funny/witty.

So here are a few hats that I like. I LOOOOVE the turban. I have a big head and hats never fit me right. Even the ones that tilt on top of your head, they just look weird. So I love turbans. They can fit much better. Maybe that’s why I like my head-wraps that I’m crocheting so much. Plus when it comes to vintage, I’m not a fancy type person. I love regular “at-home” type clothing. I have a pattern for this type of bag too. So I’m half tempted to make this. I don’t know about the black/white color combo. What do you think? ***I do not have a pattern for this turban, if you do, PLEASE let me know!!! I’d really like to see it***

There is one exception for hats that I don’t hate and that’s berets. They don’t look that bad on me. I like this one.  It looks like it’s made with tight single crochet stitches so it would hold its shape nicely. I don’t like this purse though. Looks like 2 placemats sewn together.

I found this old ad too. Just thought it was fun to look at. I believe it’s from 1917. I think you can click to make it larger.

And check out this video from 1944 in the UK. Check out the snoods in her closet and she wears one after that scene. I love snoods. They are full of snoody goodness.

i’m sick. so a short blog today.

ugh. my son has had a cold for well over a week now and now i have it. it’s not a typical cold, just settled in my lungs. i think it’s a combo of cold virus and allergies. *cough* pardon me.

I went to the thrift store yesterday because I HAD to get out of the house and I figured a hour out won’t be that bad for my son and I. And boy am I glad I went!!! I scored some awesomely amazing (what I think is 1940’s) yarn. 17 skeins of dark hunter green with golden yellow thread and 4 skeins of plain green. It says it’s a “velour crepe”. It doesn’t feel like modern velour. It feels like crepe. I think it has wonderful drape and it just screams to be made into a snood. Look at the labels too. Still has the price tag on it for 29 cents! It’s from “McCreery & Co” in Pittsburgh. I couldn’t find much online about it so I called up my grandma and she said it was a department store downtown and it wasn’t as fancy as like a Macy’s but it was a nice place. I’m so excited! I can’t wait to find the perfect pattern for it. I will most definately post pics when I do make something with it. Don’t hold your breath though, I am very patient when it comes to finding “The Perfect Pattern”. I’ve been known to wait up to 2 years! I doubt it will take that long though. I have some great snood patterns to look thru.

While I’m here….I’ll thrown in a Yucky for you. How about this sweater with matching hat! UGH!

Not all vintage crochet is cute

I love to look for great vintage goodness. I also love to look for what I call “vintage yuckies”. Anything ugly/yucky/crazy is fun to look at. I wonder if anyone ever made anything like this? I’m sure of it. Just like in today’s modern times, people wear ugly things. Let’s look at a few hats. It’s VERY easy to find ugly hats.

I do, however, like this bag.

I can’t think of anything witty and funny about this below picture. To me, it’s a cross between a dog and a tiki-hut. If that makes any sense.

ok so we have some snoody goodness here and I like that but I don’t like the pom-poms at the ear. That just looks really stupid. But what I like best for the yucky of this picture is the one below it (the second picture). I really like her page-boy hair though.

This hat is just silly! If you crochet, you’ll know that this will crush in a second. If you just bump it, it will look all wonky.  And I’m all for crazy purses, but this one is just yucky. The caption says a salute to our Russian neighbors. Not sure how this is “Russian”.

More Belated Easter

OK, this will be the last of Easter until next year. Here are the last of the phots that I am sharing with you :)

This would look cute on your front door. I don’t think I like the ribbon though. Maybe a different ribbon would look better?

I remember eggs like this when I was a child. Definately something you don’t see anymore. I also remember getting these sugar eggs in my basket on Easter and they have a little window and if you look in, you’d see a chick or a bunny. And it was made out of 100% sugar. I think I’ll have to look for those next year.

Everyone needs an egg warmer. Not sure why, but you do. And while you’re at it, make one yourself! I want a bunny one.

oh my oh my oh my! OK, remember how I said that when spring comes around, it makes me want to have a little girl? This pic below is a perfect example why I say that. Doesn’t get much sweeter than that folks. That is ALOT of work for a dress that she won’t wear that much though. She’ll grow out of it in no time. Maybe Grandma can make it, she has more time.

Warning!! Ugly Easter crochet below! What where they thinking????

Here are some more egg warmers that everyone needs. (By the way…does anyone know why you would need an egg warmer? I eat soft boiled eggs sometimes for breakfast and they don’t get cold, so I can’t figure it out).  I love the one on the left with the panic expression. “OH NO! They are going to eat me!”  The other two eggs are fast asleep and have no idea what’s coming. Mr. Panic Egg better wake them up!

OK, that’s all for Easter. Bye bye Easter. Till next year…
